ALGIERS (Algeria) - AN ITALIAN hostage kidnapped in the Algerian Sahara in February 'is still alive and in good health', according to Algeria's Tourism Minister, Smail Mimoune. Speaking to Arab-language newspaper Ennahar, the minister said news of the hostage was received 'several days before'. Authorities were still trying to determine her exact location, he added without saying more. In early May, Malian authorities said a video sent by her captors, Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQMI), showed the hostage alive. On February 18, Maria Sandra Mariani, 53 years-old, had said she was in the hands of AQMI in an audio message broadcast by the Dubai-based news channel, Al-Arabiya. The fate of the tourist will likely be addressed on Friday when foreign ministers from Mali, Niger, Mauritania and Algeria meet in Bamako to discuss security.
