Singapore inflation slows to 4.5% year-on-year in April

Sinagpore's inflation rate slowed to 4.5 per cent in April, with the rise in consumer price index largely due to higher transport costs. -- ST PHOTO: STEPHANIE YEOW SINGAPORE's inflation rate dipped below 5 per cent for the first time this year, with April's consumer price index (CPI) at 4.5 per cent on a year-on-year basis, the Department of Statistics Singapore revealed on Monday. Compared to a month ago, April's CPI rose 0.3 per cent over March. Led by higher prices of cars and petrol, transportation costs increased by 11.7 per cent. Housing cost moved up 5.1 per cent, owing to higher accommodation costs and electricity tariffs. Food prices rose 2.9 per cent mainly due to more expensive prepared meals and ingredients.
