THE Supreme Court of Singapore has launched two new initiatives in relation to the Legal Assistance Scheme for Capital Offences (Lasco), which it currently administers. The first is the Lasco Selection Panel, which will personally oversee and approve the emplacement of counsel (lawyers) on Lasco's Register of Counsel, as well as the assignment of counsel in specific cases. The second is the extension of two litigation support schemes - which the Law Society of Singapore currently administers for its pro bono lawyers - to Lasco lawyers. The Supreme Court, which comprises the Court of Appeal and the High Court, said the initiatives have been introduced in collaboration with the Law Society, and aim to take Lasco to the next level in its mission to provide high-quality legal representation for all accused persons facing capital charges in the High Court.
