SINGAPORE: The Manpower Ministry (MOM) has fined two dormitory operators a total of S$70,000 for aiding employers put up foreign workers in unacceptable accommodation. One of them, ST9 Pte Ltd, was fined S$50,000 - the highest to date for the offence. MOM conducted an inspection at three factory-converted dormitories managed by ST9 at Woodlands Industrial Park in December last year. It found more than 1,100 foreign workers at the three units. This was more than double their occupant loads. More than 600 workers were found staying on levels that were not approved to be used for housing. The other, Sunhuan Construction, was issued with fines totalling S$20,000. MOM received feedback from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) which had fined Sunhuan Construction for operating an overcrowded and unsafe workers' dormitory at Tagore Industrial Avenue.
