More look for jobs through social media

SINGAPORE - When it comes to career advancement, the old adage often still applies: It is not what you know, it is who you know. But the increasing popularity of social media has added a new dimension to this - it is not just who you know but how you know them as well. A recent survey by the Kelly Global Workforce Index showed that 21 per cent of respondents secured their most recent position through an online job posting, second only to recruitment/staffing firms, used by 31 per cent. Another 2 per cent landed a job solely through social media sites. Although the number of people hired directly through social media is still small, this looks set to grow with one in five of the respondents scouring social media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter to look for job openings or promotions.
