US high court rejects Guantanamo appeal

WASHINGTON - THE US Supreme Court struck down an appeal on Monday from dozens of Guantanamo detainees who said they feared torture or more detention if released, further dimming prospects of closing the prison soon. It was the eighth time the high court has turned down such an appeal this year. As with the previous cases, this latest one sought to determine whether a judge can order a detainee to be freed from the US naval base in southern Cuba and transferred to a third country even after the government has ruled that the person may be tortured in that country. Despite a June 2008 Supreme Court ruling that allowed Guantanamo prisoners to challenge their detention in US federal court, justices have not decided a single detainee case in the nearly three years that have since passed.
