In a first, MOM fines two dormitory operators S$70,000 for putting foreign workers in unacceptable accommodations

SINGAPORE - The Manpower Ministry (MOM) has fined, for the first time, two dormitory operators a total of S$70,000 for aiding employers to put up foreign workers in unacceptable accommodation. One of them, ST9 Pte Ltd, was fined S$50,000 - the highest to date for such an offence. The MOM conducted an inspection at three factory-converted dormitories managed by ST9 in Woodlands Industrial Park in December. It found more than 1,100 foreign workers in the three units - more than double what was allowed. More than 600 workers were found staying on levels that were not approved to be used for housing. The other operator, Sunhuan Construction, was fined a total of S$20,000. Sunhuan had earlier been fined by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) for operating an overcrowded and unsafe workers dormitory in Tagore Industrial Avenue.
