S. Korea riot police set to raid strike-hit plant

SEOUL: South Korean riot police massed Tuesday for a possible raid on an engine parts factory occupied by hundreds of strikers, as automakers said the dispute could threaten hundreds of thousands of jobs. Yoosung Enterprise makes piston rings, cylinder liners and camshafts for the country's automakers, some of which have had to cut production since about 500 of Yoosung's unionised workers went on strike over pay and working conditions. Management and police say the stoppage is illegal because workers failed to follow proper procedures and occupied factory plants. Police gave no figures but Yonhap news agency said some 3,000 riot police were deployed around Yoosung's main plant at Asan, 80 kilometres (48 miles) south of Seoul.
