KUALA LUMPUR - AirAsia, Southeast Asia's largest budget airline by fleet size, said on Tuesday its first-quarter net profit fell 23 per cent and warned that a recently introduced fuel surcharge isn't likely to fully offset the impact of rising fuel prices in the second quarter. The first-quarter performance came under pressure from rising fuel prices, while higher maintenance and staff costs also hurt profitability. Net profit for the quarter ended March 31 fell to 171.9 million ringgit (S$70.5 million) from 224.1 million ringgit a year earlier. Revenue increased 20 per cent to 1.05 billion ringgit. "The introduction of a fuel surcharge is expected to significantly offset any effect of higher fuel prices in the second half of the year, but in the second quarter it is not expected to fully offset higher fuel costs," the company said.
