SYDNEY - Former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating yesterday dismissed an Australian media report that he and former Treasurer Peter Costello are both seeking a nomination to succeed Dominique Strauss-Kahn as the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In response to the report in the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper, Mr Keating, 67, said in a statement to Dow Jones Newswires that "the story is simply a speculative beat up". A spokeswoman for Mr Costello declined to comment on the report. But she referred to an article published on Wednesday in which Mr Costello - who was a part-time governor of the IMF for almost 12 years - argued against a European heading the fund.
