#Singapore court rejects #British author's appeal against contempt #law

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - A Singapore court on Friday rejected an appeal by British author Alan Shadrake against a conviction for contempt of court and a jail sentence, state media reported. "Singapore's Court of Appeal has rejected the appeal by British writer Alan Shadrake against his conviction and sentence for contempt of court," Channel NewsAsia said in a report. Singapore's High Court had sentenced the 76-year-old writer in November to six weeks' jail and a fine of S$20,000 for scandalising the judiciary with comments in his book about the Southeast Asian city-state's use of the death penalty. He has been free on bail pending the appeal. The book "Once a Jolly Hangman: Singapore Justice in the Dock" is not available in Singapore. Wealthy Singapore, an island-nation of 5.1 million people, imposes the death penalty for crimes such as murder and has a mandatory death senten...
