Goh Lee Yin shoplifting "unlikely" caused by kleptomania

SINGAPORE: A woman with a history of kleptomania is unlikely to have had committed her latest string of shoplifting offences due to the mental condition. This was based on a report by Dr Stephen Phang, a senior consultant from the Institute of Mental Health, who said Goh Lee Yin's latest acts of crime were "unlikely to emanate from kleptomania". The 30-year-old former engineer pleaded guilty on Thursday in court after stealing branded items, worth S$8,599, from three downtown boutiques. She admitted she had stolen a Chanel bag and an Emporio Armani top worth S$5,400 in all. Another charge involving a Gucci dress, valued at some S$3,200, will be taken into consideration during sentencing. Goh, who had been diagnosed with kleptomania, was sentenced to two-and-a-half months' jail in August 2005 for shoplifting. Former Chief Justice Yong Pung How, however, reduced this to 24 m...
