China faces serious power shortage

SHANGHAI: China is facing its worst power shortage in recent years as a result of the drought in the south and rising coal prices. According to latest estimates, the power shortfall could go up to 40 million kilowatts this summer. Many provinces are adopting power rationing and factories forced to stop work are looking at heavy losses. One rubber and plastics factory in the booming industrial region west of Shanghai is closed for the day because of a power outage. It is the fourth time this month that the factory had to stop production due to power rationing. Power shortages are not uncommon in China in the summer months of July and August. But this year, they're happening earlier. The situation is being worsened by the ongoing drought which is drying rivers and reducing the capacity of hydroelectricity.
