HDB should not lose sight of its original intent of helping Singaporeans to own their first homes; and to extend its efforts to help every needy Singaporean to rent their flat at highly subsidised rates. I feel that outside of the standard HDB housing, the rest such as the more highly priced EC and DBSS types should be left to small-time private developers. The existing diversified HDB portfolio has caused it to lose focus and complicate its original intent. To achieve its social objective, the HDB must therefore raise the existing income ceiling to extend the pool of eligible buyers for subsidised HDB flats, because indeed the combined incomes of many young couples have gone up over the years and so have prices of private flats that render them out of reach for many whose incomes have gone above the HDB ceiling.
