It is not that Singaporeans do not want economic growth. Rather, we want sustainable growth that betters our prospects

MINISTER for National Development Khaw Boon Wan said that if the Government came across as if it were pursuing only economic growth, it was because it thought it was 'important to bring wages to people's pockets' ('Slower growth means fewer job opportunities'; Monday). The recent unhappiness among people despite our high growth rates has precisely been because the economic growth has not resulted in correspondingly high rates of growth in wages across all sectors and levels of income. The common worry is that the rising tide of economic growth is raising the boats of the lower-income earners so slowly that they are facing a bleak future. The astronomical growth we have experienced in the last two years has not been inclusive, and the good and bad effects have not been felt equally.
