THE Ministry of Health (MOH) has published an advisory urging Singaporeans who are travelling to Germany to observe good hygiene. This comes after an outbreak of haemolytic-uremic syndrome - a life-threatening disease characterised by renal failure - was reported there. As a precautionary measure, Singaporeans are advised not to eat raw tomatoes, cucumbers and leafy vegetables, said the advisory posted on the ministry's website. They are also urged to consume only thoroughly cooked food. Those returning from Germany should seek medical attention immediately if they develop diarrhoea and abdominal cramps, said MOH. The disease is caused by E. coli - a bacteria that lives in the digestive tracts of people and animals.
