6.4 magnitude quake shakes Chile

WASHINGTON - A 6.4 MAGNITUDE quake struck off the south-central coast of Chile on Wednesday in an area hit by a major quake last year, the US Geological Survey said. The agency said the quake struck at 12.55pm GMT (8.55pm Singapore time) offshore the Bio Bio region 96km west of the city of Concepcion, which was badly damaged in a deadly 8.8 magnitude quake that struck Chile on February 27, 2010. The USGS said the latest quake, which occurred at a depth of 15km, registered 6.4 on the Moment Magnitude Scale. -- AFP
