MANY Singaporeans have avoided travelling to Japan or consuming imports from Japan for fear of radiation risk from the damaged nuclear power plants in Fukushima. Those who are concerned may want to know that cigarette smoke also contains radioactive materials. The US Environmental Protection Agency has reported that the tobacco leaves used in making cigarettes contain radioactive material, particularly lead-210 and polonium-210. When inhaled, these radioactive particles are lodged in the lung tissues, and over time, can result in a huge radiation dose. They can damage the lungs and lead to lung cancer. According to the Health Promotion Board, passive smokers may breathe in 50 times more cancer-causing chemicals than the smoke inhaled directly from the cigarette tip.
