Spain may sue Germany for blaming Spanish cucumbers for E coli outbreak as number of cases rises dramatically

BERLIN - Germany yesterday reported a dramatic increase in the number of people infected in an E coli outbreak with 365 new cases, as the government scrambled to trace the source of the deadly bacteria. A quarter of the new cases involved the haemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious complication resulting from E coli infection that affects the blood and kidneys, Germany's Robert Koch Institute said. The HUS outbreak, one of the largest of its kind, has been the main contributor to the deaths of 16 people in northern Europe, mostly in Germany. So far, more than 1,500 cases have been reported in eight other European countries: Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Britain.
