About food safety in Singapore

I REFER to last Saturday's report ('Salmonella found in preschoolers' stool'). Salmonella infection is a very common cause of food poisoning in our part of the world. We have not heard of it for some time because of our stringent vaccination programme against it. It used to be mandatory for all food handlers in Singapore to be vaccinated against salmonella - until last year. The authorities did not give a reason for abolishing the requirement. It seems, in hindsight, better to continue with compulsory vaccination for all food handlers, given our reliance on food caterers, restaurants and food centres. Previously, besides vaccination, food handlers were given a medical examination before they were granted a licence to operate. There were also mandatory stool screenings for foreigners applying to work as food handlers here. These steps may seem redundant in modern and clean ...
