World's oldest champagne to fetch record bid

HELSINKI - TWO bottles of the world's oldest champagne are expected to fetch record-breaking bids at an auction in Finland's autonomous island province of Aaland on Friday, wine experts said. Samantha Compono, spokesman for the speciality wine auctioneer Acker Merrall & Condit told AFP that the bids should exceed the previous record set in 2008, when a bottle of 1959 Dom Perignon sold for US$40,000 (S$49,308). 'We're hoping to beat that,' she said, adding that the opening bid for each bottle will be 10,000 euros (S$17,862). The bottles, one of Veuve Clicquot and one of now-extinct champagne maker Juglar, are nearly 200 years old and were discovered last July in a shipwreck that sunk between 1825 and 1830 to the bottom of the Baltic Sea near Aaland archipelago.
