Generating profits from the "cloud"

SINGAPORE: Companies can now look forward to turning their information technology units into profit generating centres with the shift towards higher utilisation of cloud computing. That is because companies with sizeable economies of scale in cloud infrastructure such as telcos can sublet a portion of their cloud storage services to other customers. Errol Rasit, Principal Analyst of Data Centre Systems at Gartner, said: "IT is generating cash to give back into the business, or even to expand on their own innovation or expansion. So there is an attraction for organisations to do that." But many industry observers agree that the more profitable segments of cloud technology can now only be a dream for most new entrants.
