Abandoned dragon boat crafted into furniture line

HONG KONG: To coincide with the Dragon Boat Festival Monday, a local furniture boutique has launched a one-of-a-kind furniture line, crafted from an old abandoned dragon boat. The eco-friendly shop named TREE touts itself as Hong Kong's first eco-chic furniture boutique, and specializes in furniture made of teak wood. Some pieces are handcrafted from discarded items like abandoned Indonesian fishing boats, railway sleepers and bridges. "TREE's motto is recycled, reclaimed, re-loved...All products have a story behind it," said Ms Kate Babington, managing director of TREE. Hong Kong's Lantau Boat Club contacted TREE, offering them an abandoned 15-foot, 1 tonne, traditional wooden dragon boat. Dragon boats now are made of fiberglass and other materials, explained Ms Babington, thus a teak dragon boat was "redundant". "Someone didn't want (the dragon boat) sitting on the beach...
