Shanmugam proposes Singapore host nuclear safety seminar

SINGAPORE: Foreign Affairs Minister K Shanmugam has proposed that Singapore host an ASEM seminar on nuclear safety issues in 2012. He was speaking at the 10th Asia-Europe Foreign Ministers' meeting (ASEM) held in Hungary. Mr Shanmugam raised the need for increased importance of nuclear safety following the Fukushima crisis and its impact on the region. Due to the crisis, he felt that there should be more inter-regional and regional cooperation between Asian and European countries to share expertise and experience on nuclear safety issues. To that end, he said a seminar could provide a platform for practitioners and policy makers from ASEM partner countries to exchange information and share experiences. He made the comments during the plenary session to discuss the topic of "Non-Traditional Security Challenges".
