TAIPEI: Instead of throwing away used coffee beans, one company in Taiwan has turned them into a multi-million dollar business by being the first in the world to make fabric out of coffee grounds. Mr Vincent Wu, marketing manager at Singtex Industrial Company, said coffee grounds have pores that can absorb unpleasant smells. The fabric - sold under the brand, S. Café - is quick-drying and guards against the sun's damaging UV-rays, making it ideal for sportswear. Orders have come in from top brands like Nike, Adidas and North Face. Since the product's debut in 2009, the company currently has 70 multinational brands using its products, said Mr Wu. "In the first year, our sales stood at NT$50 million.
