Couple fined S$140,000 for importing puppies without licence

SINGAPORE : A husband-and-wife couple was fined a total of S$140,000 for importing seven puppies from Malaysia without a licence. Ang Soon Peng, 44, pleaded guilty to seven charges and was fined a maximum S$10,000 for each charge. His 42-year-old spouse, Soh Wan Ping, was also fined S$70,000 for committing similar offences. Should they fail to pay the fines, the pair would each have to spend 28 weeks behind bars. The court heard that the couple was detained in 2008 for smuggling a puppy from Malaysia. But Soh said that it could help her ease her depression and the offence was compounded on compassionate grounds. In this latest case, the pair had driven a car to Johor Bahru at around 3.30pm on March 9 after Ang received a call from a man known as "Andy" who told him that he had puppies which were ready for collection.
