AS THE presidential election nears, we need to think through how we should vote and ensure that we have the right candidate as our next President. I would put the qualities needed for the highest position under four titles: Commitment: We need a President who is totally committed to serving the people. He has to be strong enough to respond to growing expectations from Singaporeans and help manage the complexities of positioning Singapore in a globalised community. Character: He should be able to command our admiration and respect. We need a President who will be able to unite the people and help harness our energy to build a better future. Competence: As the President holds the 'second key' to withdraw and deploy our reserves, he must be professional and courageous enough to work with the Government.
