#security Police arrest 50 for suspected loansharking activities

SINGAPORE: Police have arrested 50 people in their latest loansharking operation which lasted 14 hours. Simultaneous raids were conducted at several locations islandwide including Jurong, Woodlands, Yishun, Ang Mo Kio, Bishan, Hougang and Tampines. Preliminary investigations revealed that all the suspects had opened bank accounts and given away their Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards and Personal Identification Number (PIN) to loansharking syndicates to facilitate their illicit businesses. At least 38 of the suspects are also believed to be either borrowers or guarantors. During the operation, ATM cards and bank passbooks were also seized as case exhibits. First-time offenders found guilty of assisting in the carrying on of the business of an unlicensed moneylender, may be fined between S$30,000 and S$300,000.
