To put a historical perspective to this article, I think the first thing to go wrong came way before Mr Khaw’s time and that was the corporatisation of health care. Forcing hospitals to embark on a for-profit route was the first step down a slippery slope. The argument given then was that this would encourage competition and hence cost savings. The idea was to let the so-called public hospitals capture a share of the pie that the private hospitals had monopolised then. I truly wonder how much their efforts to capture the private patients have paid off. The minister then did not understand that not everything can be run as a corporation – capitalism is not applicable to a basic necessity like health care.
