Thousands of Syrian refugees flood into Turkey

ANTAKYA, Turkey: Around 4,600 Syrians have fled a brutal crackdown against pro-democracy protesters and are staying in camps in southern Turkey, a government official in Ankara told AFP Saturday. "The latest figure is 4,600," the official said. Hundreds fled over just a few hours after a previous estimate by local media earlier Saturday that put the number to around 4,300. Most came from Jisr al-Shugur, a city in northwestern Syria roughly 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the Turkish border that is the latest flashpoint in the anti-regime uprising to come under assault by Syrian security forces. On Friday, Syrian television said the army was forced to intervene because "armed groups" had allegedly committed atrocities in the city.
