Taiwan seeks up to 25 years jail in food scare

TAIPEI: Taiwan prosecutors Monday sought jail terms of up to 25 years for four people on charges of selling banned chemicals to food makers, triggering the island's worst food scare in decades. The four were linked to two companies suspected of having sold banned chemicals -- meant to make plastic pliable -- to 16 companies islandwide, allegedly endangering the health of millions in Taiwan and abroad. "The crimes they committed have endangered the health of people for a long time," prosecutors of the district court in the central county of Changhua said in a statement. "And since it surfaced, the case has caused severe panic among the public, as well as inflicted huge losses on innocent food and beverage makers and marred the images of Taiwan companies."
