JAPANESE produce is clearing checks and reaching consumers here faster after Singapore's food safety regulatory body introduced new steps to speed up the process. Suppliers and restaurants said the improved process for import and checks has halved the delivery time from almost two days to just a day, and consumers in turn have been enjoying fresher food. Following the Japanese earthquake and nuclear radiation crisis in March, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) has been holding and testing imports of Japanese fruits, vegetables, seafood, meat, milk and milk products for radiation contamination before releasing them for sale. If radioactive contaminants are detected in any sample, the affected shipment is disposed of. An AVA spokesman told The Straits Times that it has since varied the frequency of testing based on its risk assessments. She said food imports from '...
