Coal exporter Vietnam gets first import

HANOI: Coal exporter Vietnam has imported its first-ever shipment of the fossil fuel to feed power plants in the energy-hungry nation, official media said on Wednesday. The first batch of 9,570 tonnes (10,530 tons) has arrived from Indonesia, the Vietnam News said, quoting state-run Vietnam National Coal, Mineral Industries Holding Corp (Vinacomin). Tran Xuan Hoa, Vinacomin's general director, said it made economic sense for Vietnam, which has large deposits of anthracite coal and has exported it for decades, to buy the cheaper bituminous variety for power plants. "We should sell high-quality coal and import cheaper types," he told the newspaper, adding that anthracite is better suited for metallurgy and chemical industries than power generation.
