Businesses can soon have fully Tamil, Chinese domain names

TO BETTER click with customers, businesses will soon be able to list the addresses of their websites entirely in Chinese or Tamil characters. The national registry for domain names, the Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC), on Wednesday said it will accept such registrations from July 4. It currently offers domain names that feature Chinese characters followed by a .sg, .com.sg, .gov.sg, .org.sg, .edu.sg, .net.sg or .per.sg suffix. But with yesterday's announcement, these suffixes will be replaced with Chinese or Tamil characters for the word 'Singapore'. This is the first time domain names that feature Tamil characters will be accepted by SGNIC, which is owned by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore.
