New tools to aid dengue fight: An alternative method undergoing trials could soon spare patients the pain of bei...

THOSE who suspect they may be down with dengue could soon be diagnosed without undergoing the traditional blood test. An alternative method undergoing trials could soon spare patients the pain of being pricked by needles to draw blood and, instead, does the job with just a swab of the mouth for saliva. Developed by the National Environment Agency's (NEA's) Environmental Health Institute (EHI), the saliva-based diagnostic test is non-invasive and is capable of detecting dengue in its early stages. The saliva kit underwent a two-year trial from 2005 and was tested on 144 patients here. It is now on trial in several countries, such as Cambodia and Sri Lanka. EHI is looking to commercialise the kit. The public-health laboratory, set up in 2002, is leading Singapore's fight against dengue. As part of its efforts, it has also developed a more efficient device to trap mosquitoes....
