Our reader says the Govt should foster a culture of working from home to reduce stress on the public transport system.

I READ with interest the recent articles on proposed measures to improve the public transport network. There are limitations to focusing solely on building roads and rail lines, as well as increasing the number of trains and buses, and expanding the bus-lane hours. I am surprised that there have not been meaningful discussions on telecommuting as a way to reduce pressure on the public transport system during peak hours. With Singapore developing its next- generation fibre-optic network and the proliferation of mobile devices that allow one to work from anywhere, the technological barriers to telecommuting are diminishing. However, there still exists a culture where employees must be 'seen' to be working and productivity is inextricably linked to a physical location.
