BANGKOK: Not your usual passengers getting off the plane at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. Just last week, 400 star tortoises were found stuffed in suitcases which had not been open for 10 days. Some died of severe dehydration. Their estimated total worth - over US$30,000. Thailand's location makes it a crossroad for wildlife trafficking. Dr Theerapat Prayurasiddhi, Deputy Director General of Wildlife and Plant Conservation at the Department of National Parks, said: "We [are becoming] a hub for transportation. And all the illegal wildlife trade and even the legal wildlife trade, will pass through Thailand to many countries in Southeast Asia, and maybe around the world (as well)."
