A pleasant and easy going person, colleagues in Shell remembered my mother as a quiet and helpful person who always had a smile on her face. I recall her sharing her experiences of working with some of the more difficult managers and how she was always able to manage them with her amiable personality and commitment. In the same breath, I could never be more proud when my mother clocked in her 25th year with Shell. A huge write up was dedicated to her in the in-house magazine of that time, acknowledging her as Shell Singapore’s first female employee to achieve this significant milestone. Colleagues who remembered my mother would playfully contrast the two of us: “You’re so talkative unlike your mother who was a very quiet person.” I too do not agree to the saying ‘like mother like daughter’.
