Why send elderly to nursing homes? The culture of living together as a large family needs to be restored: Voices

There has been a lot of media attention on nursing homes in recent days, with some people angry at the behaviour of the caregivers in these homes. We also hear of old people dying alone in their own homes, their bodies decomposing before they are discovered. There is no doubt that it is wrong to mistreat our elderly or anyone in need of long-term daily care. But the root of the problem runs much deeper. First, who works in these homes? Often they are the nursing staff we import from other countries. They are not paid a lot, and have to handle old invalids who often do not speak English or their mother tongue, and who also need constant attention. Train and educate such nursing home staff. Motivate them and pay them right. Yes, a cost is involved and, if need be, the Government needs to step in. But far more fundamental are the underlying social issues. Singaporeans are put...
