Thai police on patrol after election worker shot dead -Today Online

BANGKOK - Thai police have put 2,000 officers on standby to guard politicians campaigning for the July 3 election on concerns over possible violence that was reinforced by the shooting death of a vote canvasser yesterday in Bangkok. "The police have a clear plan on how to handle the situation during the campaign and election," spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri said. "We have stepped up efforts to seek intelligence about possible political violence." An election worker for the Bhum Jai Thai party, a partner in Thailand's ruling coalition, was shot on Thursday in Khao San Road, an area of Bangkok popular with budget travellers. A lone gunman fired five shots at Mr Suban Jiraphanwanich, killing him and wounding his wife and a campaign aide, The Nation reported yesterday, quoting the local police.
