Speciality rice shops around the country are using the machine, produced by home appliance maker Sanyo Electric, to help boost sales of rice, which have declined over the past few decades. Although the machine can produce ordinary wheat bread as well, Sanyo describes its machine as a 'rice bread maker'. Its nickname 'Gopan' is a play on the words 'gohan' - meaning 'cooked rice' in Japanese - and 'pan', which means 'bread'.
