SINGAPORE - Security guards are in hot demand with a number of private residential, commercial and industrial buildings coming up in recent years. And while security guards typically work 12-hour shifts - which is the maximum allowed under the Employment Act - MediaCorp has learnt it is not uncommon, especially among Malaysians, for them to take on 24- and even 48-hour shifts due to a manpower shortage. Over the past three years, the Ministry of Manpower - which said it proactively inspects security agencies for compliance with the law - told MediaCorp it has convicted 10 of them for flouting this legal limit. Unless for exceptional circumstances such as accident or threat of accident or work that is essential to national defence, breaching this law results in a fine of up to $5,000 or a jail term of up to six months or both, for a first-time offender.
