By 2040, a plane that can take you from Paris to Tokyo in 150 minutes

LE BOURGET (France) - Fancy travelling from Paris to Tokyo in two-and-a-half hours? Aerospace group EADS, owner of planemaker Airbus, thinks it has the answer - a hypersonic jet (picture) that flies at twice the speed of the Concorde, the world's first supersonic commercial passenger aircraft. The plane will fly above the atmosphere, yet take off from a regular runway. EADS chief technical officer Jean Botti said: "It will be flying at the edge of space. It won't be a rocket. It won't be a plane. It will be a rocket-plane." The plane, being developed in collaboration with Japan, could be operational by 2040, with commercial flights planned by 2050. It would cut the flying time from Paris to Tokyo by more than a quarter to only two-and-a-half hours, while New York would take 90 minutes - compared to three-and-a-half hours for the Concorde and almost eight hours in a normal ...
