MCYS to increase eldercare staff - Channel News Asia

SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) is studying ways to increase the number of caregivers in the labour-intensive eldercare sector. Visiting St Luke's Eldercare Centre in Hougang on Wednesday, Acting Minister for MCYS Chan Chun Sing said the sector needs to be redesigned to attract more Singaporeans. By some estimates, an ideal ratio is one caregiver for every six seniors in a daycare centre. But the industry is finding it tough to maintain these numbers. Major-General (NS) Chan said the eldercare industry faces manpower challenges, especially when it comes to attracting locals to join. In addition, industry players said the lower pay and lack of career advancement remain as obstacles when it comes to hiring.
