Tsunami alert cancelled after 6.7-magnitude quake strikes Japan's Honshu Island

TOKYO - A tsunami alert issued earlier today by Japan has been cancelled, after a 6.7-magnitude earthquake rocked the country's north-east coast this morning. The Japanese meteorological agency said the temblor hit at 6.51am (5.51am Singapore time) about 50km off the east coast of Miyako, Iwate prefecture, at a depth of 20km - not far from where the March 11 earthquake struck off the east coast of Honshu Island. There were no immediate reports of damage from this morning's quake. An advisory warning of a possible tsunami of up to 50 cm in height had been issued, and residents living in evacuation shelters were put on alert and people were moved to higher ground. However, no waves were seen and the alert was later lifted. The authorities have warned residents of areas devastated by the March 11 quake to be wary of mudslides.
