Sports bodies drive growth in charity

SINGAPORE: They may not be synonymous with the charity sector but sports bodies have driven the growth of new charities registered here in recent times. So far this year, 26 sports groups were registered as charities, compared to 18 for the whole of last year and only four in 2009. The surge is because the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) - one of five sector administrators assisting the Commissioner of Charities to oversee charities - has required the National Sports Associations (NSAs) to register as a charity by March 31 this year, before they could qualify for SSC grants. The SSC director for NSA performance management, Ms Catherine Quah, said the associations' promotion of sports "contributes greatly to developing healthy and resilient Singaporeans".
