Pauline Nyiramasuhuko, a former minister for the family and women's empowerment, has faced the charges over atrocities committed in Rwanda's southern Butare region during the 1994 genocide. The hearing started shortly after 0700 GMT (3pm Singapore time) with sources at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) saying it could be lengthy because verdicts will be delivered not only for Nyiramasuhuko but also for her five co-accused.
