Detained prominent Chinese activist Ai Weiwei was released on bail on Wednesday due to what the Chinese authorities describe as good attitude in confessing his crimes, as well as a chronic disease that he suffers from. Well and good, except that the situation is anything but. Apart from Ai's severe reticence in speaking to the media upon his release - a quality he was not known to possess prior to his confinement - the release was also unexpected. It begs the questions of why and why now. It also begets the query: Has foreign pressure played a role in expediting Ai's release in particular and improving human rights in China in general? After almost three months in detention, a visibly thinner though still portly Ai, who is said to be suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure, was allowed to return home.
