South-east Asia in danger of becoming 'major drug hub': UN

BANGKOK - The United Nations anti-drug office has warned that South-east Asia is becoming a major drug hub, driven by soaring production and consumption of new synthetic "designer drugs" as well as heroin. "The international community seems to have taken its eye off the ball on drug control in South-east Asia," UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) executive director Yury Fedotov said on Thursday. "We have to be proactive on all fronts before the region again becomes a major drugs hub." While global production of opium fell 38 per cent last year as plant disease hit crops in top producer Afghanistan, output in second-largest producer Myanmar jumped after a big increase in land under cultivation, the UNODC said in its World Drug Report 2011.
