Singapore backs proposals for stronger global nuclear safety framework

SINGAPORE: Singapore has supported proposals to strengthen the global nuclear safety framework in the wake of Japan's Fukishima crisis. This was its position at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Safety in Vienna from 20-24 June. The Singapore delegation was led by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Masagos Zulkifli and comprised officials from the ministries of home affairs, environment and water resources, foreign affairs, trade and industry, as well as the National Environment Agency and civil defence force. In a joint statement on Saturday, they said the conference has launched the process to review and strengthen the global nuclear safety framework, improve global emergency preparedness and response mechanisms and strengthen the role of the IAEA in nuclear safety.
